6-weeks of Crutches

This past May I was in ballet class and something snapped on the back of my right heel. It hurt like crazy and was swollen for about 2 weeks. After those two weeks it was a little wonky and would hurt a little time and time again, but I just ignored it for a few weeks thinking it would get better. Then in July it went all crazy again and I made an appointment with the podiatrist. I had my first appointment with her last Thursday. At that time she couldn't feel anything that felt like a torn tendon or ligament. After rudimentarily ruling out an issue with that she did some more poking and prodding and suggested that it might be a broken heel spur. Apparently a heel spur can be caused by inflexible achilles tendons and then they can get yanked on hard enough to snap. She though that might have been the issue and ordered an x-ray. They have a x-ray set-up in the office so they were able to do the x-ray and analysis while I was there. It turns out that I do have a heel spur and it does appear that it has a small break. The first course of treatment involves being booted and not having any weight on that foot for 6 weeks. The hope is that the broken portion will scar over and the pain will go away and it will just need a little PT to re-strengthen the foot and leg and to re-stretch the tendon. We are hoping this is what happens so that I don't have to have surgery.

I have officially passed the one week mark and so far I'm doing alright. I have some bruising on my ribs and upper arms from the crutches. I have passed the shooting pain from my hands and wrists though, so that is a good sign. That means those are getting stronger and I'm hoping that the wrist I twisted a few days ago after I tripped on the rug will be feeling back to normal in a few days. My shoulders are still a little rough, but they too are getting stronger. Five weeks to go and I'm hoping this time off of it will be worth the wait. I can't wait to be able stretch both legs, walk, drive, and stand with ease.
