Life Lessons from Mr. Spock

Today marked the passing of Leonard Nimoy. He was best known for his role as Spock on Star Trek: The Original Series (TOS). As I spent some time today thinking back on the influence or impact that Mr. Nimoy had on my life I thought of a list of "life lessons".

1) Simply because something is a part of your nature, you don't have to give-in to it or let it define you. When we first meet Spock in TOS he is about as Vulcan as you can get, he had suppressed the human half of his nature. With time he learned what parts of his human nature could be used to compliment his Vulcan nature and eventually learned a sort of inner balance. I for one really could use to learn a little bit more of this balance in my own life.

2) Loyalty to those that you love. We all remember the time that Spock died to save the Enterprise in The Wrath of Kahn. But really, Spock risked a lot for people throughout TOS and the movies. One of the best examples would be his risk to self and career in The Menagerie. This is the episode where he saves Captain Pike. I love that one of the basic tenets behind this entire series and the following media empire is love and the capacity of people (human and non) to work together with mutual love and respect.

3) On a less serious note, he also taught me that it was important to be confident in who you are. I mean this character rocked green/blue eye shadow like a boss.

4) He also taught us the importance of having a sense of humor. After all, the Ballad of Bilbo Baggins is a classic!

5) And finally, he taught me to be kind, thoughtful, and deliberate. I often fail at many of these things, but he taught us, in fact to Live Long and Prosper (LLAP). The best way to do so is to be good to one another and kind to our selves.

As we celebrate this man's life and legacy I thought I'd share a little tidbit from a fellow fan on Facebook: "According to Vulcan mourning traditions, a death is mourned only if the life was wasted. Leonard Nimoy lived an incredible life and leaves behind a wonderful legacy - one of compassion, creativity, and kindness".

May we all think a little more kindly of those that we travel with on our little blue spaceship. May we all be worthy of the future that Gene Roddenberry envisioned and that Leonard Nimoy, William Shatner, George Takai, Nichelle Nichols, DeForrest Kelley, and Walter Koenig brought to life.

Lots of love and prayers for peace for his family at this time as they adjust to his absence. And from one honorary granddaughter, Live Long and Prosper and thank you for helping to paint the image of the world that I want to live in.
