Strawberry Jelly
This past weekend I made my first attempt at canning (of any kind), by myself. I decided that we should have some jam on hand because Tom typically eats two PP&Js for lunch every work day. We have been slowing changing our habits so that we are making more at home and buying less at the store. In some cases this is much cheaper (like with laundry soup, bread, etc.) and other times it is a matter of learning new skills and be a little more self-sufficient.
So, anyways, back to the jam...I decided to try and make our own jam. I decided on strawberry because that and grape are the only flavors that Tom buys from the store, and strawberries seemed easier to get a hold of and manage.
- Step 1: Choose the type of Jam - I decided that I wanted to try freezer jam instead of normal jam because it is a whole lot faster and we have a chest freezer where it can live.
- Step 2: Get supplies - I did have to go pick up some freezer-safe jars and some pectin.
- Step 3: Buy strawberries - I usually buy produce from a co-op and it just so happened that they had flats of strawberries this past week, score.
- Step 4: Clean, cut out the stems, and smash strawberries. For the sake of time, I ended up using my little food processor to "smash" them.
- Step 5: Mix sugar, pectin, and strawberry goo until well mixed and then pour into jars. I think it came out a pretty color and the one jar we opened and tried tasted pretty good. So I now have a nice little stash in my freezer.
In other news, we have some of the cutest animals, here are our ferrets, being all ferrety:
Her (Bandit) eyes are nearly that red in real life.
