Books 2014: Wool

Okay, this was a book I read on the recommendation of our awesome backyard neighbor. The book is Wool by Hugh Howey. This was Howey's first book and for a first time out, it wasn't too bad.

It is set in the future and humans now are forced to live underground because the outside is so toxic it will kill you in pretty short order. This underground sanctuary is called "the Silo". The Silo is huge with something like 150 floors that includes mines, generators, water pumps, grow houses, nurseries, schools, IT, and living quarters. The entire system works on a specific rule-to never mention the outside. If you question the reason behind the Silo, question what happened outside, you are sent outside. The story is about one women's, Juliette, to understand her world and her place in it.

I like the book. It was a fast and easy read. Although it is set in a distopian future the story and setting were just original enough not to be stale. I like the characters and the rules. I liked the way the situation was used to point out that sometimes governments decide what we need to know and that in doing that they have curtailed our very freedoms. I wish that there had been a little more exploration of how this world came to be and that the ending was a little stronger. However, I would recommend this for as a fast and entertaining read.
