Valentine's Day and Other News

Tom and I have been season ticket holders to Ballet West for several years now. This is there 50th season and they were able to do a massive renovation/extension of their home theatre this past year and we had tickets to their production of Sleeping Beauty. Last year during their "Valentine's" production I was massively sick so we were unable to attend. This all meant that I was really looking forward to this production and figured it was a great way to enjoy date-night.

Well, it wasn't to be. Tom and I managed to leave the house on time to get downtown, park, and walk to the theatre with some time to spare. We were doing well. Then, I took the wrong right. You see, downtown there is this ring of streets you can't take a left-turn on because of the tracks. Don't get me wrong, I love our growing public transportation infrastructure, but the left-turn is necessary for proper and timely navigation of a metropolitan area. I turned north one block too soon to get into the parking structure we wanted to use (cheap and close to the theatre) and it took us the next 20 minutes to work our way back around to the entrance. Too bad by that time, the show had already started. So, here we were downtown, with no useless tickets. I was so bummed.

Tom decided to "save" the night by seeing if there was any movie that hadn't started yet at the dollar theater. There was, we got tickets, were contentedly watching our movie and got to within what we are guessing was 10-15 minutes from the end when the power on the block went out. So, no ballet and no resolution to the movie. It was a bang-up night.

The theater was nice enough to allow us to use the tickets from that night to redeem tickets for a show last night. Too bad the movie we went to see was sold out because the one we saw was TERRIBLE. Now, I wasn't expecting much from the Legend of Hercules but I'm certain there was actually only two references to the actual legend of Hercules. Also, I think I've seen better graphics made on people's personal computers. Yikes! It is however a great candidate for MST3K.

Finally, I did receive my diploma for my GIS certificate. Even though I have a bachelor's degree and finished classes for this one back in August, I was surprisingly choked-up when I saw it. It felt really nice to hold tangible proof of my efforts in my hands.

I can't wait until Tom gets to have that same experience. It is a few good years off still, but he is working so hard for it. He has turned himself into a pretty good little student and seems to really understand all the math he is doing (which isn't amazing because of who he is but rather because math is the great undiscovered country in my own brain). I think there is a section he is working on now that has him a little stumped but the first test's worth of stuff seemed to be pretty easy for him. Just in case anyone is keeping track, he is in Calculus II this semester. I can't remember for sure, but I think he has 2 other GEs and 2 or 3 math classes left before he is done with his associates. Which, I think we will actually apply and graduate him with because having that achievement after all this time will be nice. Once done there he has a few (like maybe 6) math classes left to finish the degree in math and then the education stuff before he finishes his bachelors. Sometimes it feels like forever, but I'm so proud of how far he has come, especially because of his academic history.

Okay, I need to go make breakfast and do something useful.
